Belgium: 'Divorce papers on the table' - EU ministers discuss draft Brexit agreement
Ministers of the 27 EU states arrived in Brussels to discuss the draft Brexit deal and reach an agreement on the political declaration on the future relationship between the UK and the EU, during the General Affairs Council meeting on Monday.
"A painful week in European politics is starting, we have the divorce papers on the table," said Austrian Minister Gernot Blumel, adding that "45 years of a difficult marriage are coming to an end."
The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Stef Blok commented that despite the “regret” about Brexit, the ministers are satisfied with the draft agreement and will now concentrate on the political agreement "which has to be worked out this week."
The EU and the UK agreed on the draft text of a Brexit agreement after months of talks last week.
The UK will officially leave the EU on March 29, 2019 which will be followed by a transition period of 21 months until the end of December 2020.
